There are many cost and time saving, as well as waste reducing
principles and methodologies that are part of business, especially
the business of manufacturing.
Lean Manufacturing and Just-in-Time (JIT) Production
are aimed at eliminating waste in every area of work including
customer relations, product design, supplier networks and factory
management.
- The principles of these applications include:
Pull Processing – products are pulled from the consumer
end (demand) just-in-time to be used, instead of being pushed
from the production end.
Reducing or eliminating set up times – the aim is
to establish set up times of less than 10 minutes.
- Reduced
lot sizes – reducing lot sizes allows for
products to be produced and then transferred directly to the
consumer. It also allows for quickly identifying an abnormal
situation that will prevent production of a defective product.
- Perfect first-time quality – the
goal is to reveal and solve problems at the source resulting
in zero defects.
Waste minimization- waste is minimized by eliminating
all activities that do not add value. The goal is to maximize
the use of scarce resources such as people, capital and land.
- Continuous improvement – people
at all levels within the organization look for ways of reducing
costs, increasing productivity and information sharing.
- Flexibility – a
company’s goal is to produce
a greater diversity of products quickly, without sacrificing
efficiency.
- Building and maintaining relationships
with suppliers – by
working collectively, and collaboratively sharing information
companies and their suppliers work to ensure that the supplier
provides the best product or service to meet the company’s
needs.

Lean and JIT are focused on getting the right items, to the
right place at the right time. The result is perfect work flow,
while minimizing waste, yet allowing for flexibility and change.
What if the principles of Lean Manufacturing
and Just-in-Time were applied to training? For the last three
issues of the Quality News, we have asked that you ponder the
following:
- Are you involved in developing your company’s
budget? Does your company spend thousands of dollars on airfares,
car rentals, hotels and other travel-related expenses each
year for training and meeting in other parts of the country
or world? How would you like to significantly reduce or eliminate
these expenses?
- Imagine being able to sit in the comfort
of your own office and take that ISO, Manufacturing or Management
Development course that you need, and still have the feel of
a real classroom setting – completely interactive. Imagine
holding a weekly or monthly meeting with your regional managers
without having anyone leave their office.
- Do you struggle with
logistics of covering shifts while an auditor is in training
for a day or two? Imagine completing training through shorter
modules before, during and after work at you own facility.

BGT is pleased to announce the launch of
a new on-line training system that, through the principles of
Lean and JIT will answer these questions.
This training is customer
driven, is delivered in short modules, and can be delivered on
your time schedule.
This very advanced on-line training has the
feel of a real classroom and is completely interactive. The key
benefits to you and your company are:
- Waste Minimization – the
cost of airfares, car rentals, hotels and other training
and meeting related expenses can be greatly reduced or even
eliminated.
- Smaller Lot Sizes – you can
access trainers and consultants in hourly segments that allow
you to target specific knowledge or skill sets.
- Flexibility – You
can access training or consulting, with our trainers or yours,
allowing for a broad range of products and services to be
available on demand

- Reduced or eliminated set up times – After
initial set up, you can move from the plant floor to the training
room in less than 10 minutes. Travel time is eliminated.
- Continuous Improvement – Your employees
can access training before, after or during their working day
and not be absent the entire day.
- Pull processing – You, the customer,
can determine the right training, the right time, the right
trainer thereby pulling the training process.

For companies who
are serious about saving time and money and increasing
production, the transition to interactive desktop on-line
training and meetings is the logical step. Training and
meetings are integral to the success of any business, regardless
of size. If this is an accepted fact, and there is an opportunity
to reduce the costs associated with them, then what are
you waiting for? |
